Millions of years ago, my ancestors threw some rubber, leaves, oil, wood, and bauxite into a cave in Iowa and in 1995 we discovered the cave. After millions of years of flooding, earthquakes, lightning strikes, and chemical reactions, the ingredients became a Day 6 bicycle and we are the proud beneficiaries of this ‘miracle’. I have put absolutely no time, thought, intelligence, or effort into designing these bikes. Nor did I utilize any kind of physics or science. Every angle, dimension, and part simply formed itself and it all just fits and works perfectly with the human body. Isn’t that amazing? It would be more amazing if they repaired themselves and reproduced but my descendents may still benefit from those advancements. We will, however, be thankful for what we have. As you can see from our customers’ testimonies, they are as thankful as we are for this random and spontaneous chain of events that created such a wonderful piece of machinery.
That is a silly story but it is not too important because it has no present or future consequences. Many, however, believe the same evolution story concerning themselves which is sad because there are very real consequences to believing that story. In Hebrews 9:27 it says that ‘all are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment’. Either God created and there is a judgement or Big Bang created and you just die and turn back to dust.
Having faith in an explosion that creates is a problem because everyone knows that God exists and that explosions don’t create. They know because His creation everywhere screams design, intelligence, power, purpose, beauty, creativity, and ownership. All you need to do is look at a hummingbird, the human eye, a chicken egg, an apple seed, any kind of reproduction, human DNA, a cashew (!), etc., etc., etc. Romans 1:20-21 says: “Since the creation of the world, God’s eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen in what He has made so that all people are without excuse. Although they know God, they neither glorify Him as God nor give thanks to Him but their thinking becomes futile and their foolish hearts are darkened.”
Everyone knows bicycles don’t create themselves and everyone knows men don’t create themselves. We are all without excuse, but some people claim to be atheist. Why would they do that?
Psalm 10:4 gives us the answer: “In his pride the wicked (those who are not interested in God or have no regard for God) does not seek Him. In all his thoughts there is no room for God.”
This is why people will talk about all kinds of vulgar things but they will not talk about religion and they can’t tolerate any speech associated with God and Christianity. It is deemed dangerous or misinformation (it IS dangerous to the lie they are living in!). They have no room in ALL their thoughts for God. John 3:19-20 says it this way: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness (sin) instead of light (holiness) because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light (God/Christ/holiness) and will not come into the light for fear that their evil deeds will be exposed.”
When a person knows they are living in darkness, apart from Christ, they inherently avoid the light. Their knowledge of their sin tells them they deserve punishment, so they avoid anything that reminds them of their court date with the judge.
It is easy to convince ourselves that because we are nice or generous or smiley or sit in a pew on Sunday morning or pay our taxes or have never robbed a bank or raped a woman or murdered or live by a high moral standard or are better than those on the 6:00 news - then we are good. We have no ‘big’ sins (by our definition) and are quite likable but, unfortunately, this is not God’s standard for entering His perfect, sinless, paradise. While we may have avoided the ‘big’ sins, the hidden ones condemn us as much as the visible ones. The selfish motive, bitterness, strife, gossip, arrogance, unforgiveness, envy, lust, self-preservation, spitefulness, jealousy, hatred, cruel thoughts, unforgiveness, impurity, malice, lies, vengeance, perverted desires, cruelty, pride, hardness of heart, greed, sexual immorality, unjust judgement, arrogance, unforgiveness (for the third time), and lack of mercy (to name a few) - these are the things that we think are hidden like a mistress but they are clearly seen by God.
Romans 3:11 says, “There is no one righteous, not even one”.
Proverbs 20:9 asks, ‘Who can say, I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?
The answer is an emphatic “NO ONE”!
Let that sink in.
If someone asks you if you are good, what is your first response?
If it is, “Well I am pretty good” or “I am not that bad” or anything like that, then you are not understanding how perfect and holy God is and how utterly futile it is for a sinner to enter His presence.
The dilemma is God loves us AND He hates our sin because our sin keeps us from coming to God and receiving eternal life and sin destroys us in this earthly life.
(Keep in mind that Satan hates you and he loves your sin; because your sin destroys your life and keeps you from receiving eternal life. Your sin will give you eternal death.)
God wants us to enter paradise and be with Him forever in a place so wonderful we can hardly imagine it but we can’t enter perfection because of our sin.
We need help – a savior to get us to the other side.
Imagine the Pilgrims fleeing Europe and coming to the ocean and trying to sail the ship to America having never been on a ship before.
Getting to heaven without Christ is like that but infinitely more impossible!
Some cling to the idea that God in His goodness will let us in but it is His goodness that permeates heaven and it is His absolute goodness that prevents us from entering.
A good farmer doesn’t let the wolf into the sheep pen.
A good father doesn’t let his young son date prostitutes.
A good judge doesn’t let criminals go free.
A good friend doesn’t let their friends drive drunk.
Absolute goodness cannot coexist with sin.
THE problem we all have is God is good and we are not.
Some just can’t admit they are bad.
In Revelation 3:17, Jesus deals with this deception.
He tells the church members in Laodicea, “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”
You say: I am okay. God says: you are deceived.
Until a person comes to the place where they know, without any doubt, that they can never enter heaven without Christ, they are deceived; and proud of their false sense of goodness.
They can never enter heaven because the key that unlocks heaven’s door is repentance.
In Matthew, 3:2, Jesus said, ‘Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near’.
If there is no repentance, there is no entrance into heaven.
If a person thinks they are good, how can they repent?
It sounds so simple but in the real world it is quite difficult for a person to admit that there is nothing good in them. It is hard for them to admit that they deserve to go to hell which is the only option available when you don’t go toward God.
How about you?
Have you kept your heart pure?
Are you clean and without sin?
Some people are quite clever and deceptive and can talk their way out of troubling circumstances but, will it turn out well when God examines you?
Can you deceive Him as you would a man? (based on Job 13)
The prophet Jeremiah said that the heart of man is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. (Jeremiah 17:9)
Do you believe it?
Do you want to spend eternity with God in a state of complete forgiveness and reconciliation or away from Him in eternal torment?
If you want paradise, you must humble yourself before God and He will lift you up.
God is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
My prayer is that you will acknowledge that you are not good and, in fact, a sinner headed away from God.
…that you will humble yourself before God and repent and be saved.
…that the peace and forgiveness of God will set you free as one set free from a dark and dirty prison cell.
Colossians 1:21 is the turning point:
“Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body, through death, to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation – if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.”
Translation: You THINK God is your enemy because you HAVE broken His laws.
Your knowledge says you deserve punishment.
But, by FAITH you begin to understand that God does NOT want to punish you.
He wants to redeem you!
And He CAN redeem you because Christ died for your sin.
Christ took your life sentence and you went free.
Christ took your place in line at the cross, guillotine, firing squad, electric chair and your crime was paid for.
By His leading, hope begins to stir.
You realize He died and you can be holy in His sight, without blemish, and free from accusation.
You can be redeemed and enter His perfect presence.
God is waiting for you.
You must repent and confess and be born again.
God is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

Back to the bikes.
As of today, we are based in Southwest Iowa where Day 6 develops bicycles that are comfortable and practical and fit the design of the human body. Many people who are older or have hip or knee replacements or who suffer from neck and back pain or are obese or who have any number of physical limitations or who are just larger come to Day 6 because they want to be able to enjoy riding a bicycle again. Many people who find Day 6 had quit riding bikes for two simple reasons: the last time they rode a bike it either hurt them or it scared them. Of particular benefit is our wide seat, comfortable backrest, extended handlebars that eliminate leaning forward, and the ability to reach the ground with both feet while stopped. Day 6 virtually eliminates all stress on the low back, neck, wrists and shoulders, and in the butt and crotch. I injured my back at the age of 24 and was unable to ride a bicycle with my four young children in my 30’s. Traditional bicycles were out of the question and I didn’t want a full-blown recumbent so I began modifying bikes I picked up at pawn shops or junk yards. It didn’t take long to realize that what was needed was an entirely new kind of design. After multiple trials and years of testing (and a decade before anyone had heard of a crank forward), we developed a frame that was worthy of engineered drawings and production. The Day 6 bicycles we produce today are the result of years of developing this design and it is so good that after 21 years of producing them, we have not changed the basic geometry at all.
Before Day 6, we developed wheelchair seating systems for the elderly and handicapped and that business, The Comfort Company, is still thriving. There we learned how seating must accommodate the design of the human body and where comfort and real-world performance must meet for something to be truly remarkable. Based on the testimonies we get from our customers, I think we achieved our goal.
